Partners in Teaching Provides Seizure Awareness For Schools
Imagine being a child with epilepsy and facing social challenges in addition to seizures. Indeed, most children living with epilepsy wish for two things: to have their seizures disappear completely and to be treated just like any other kid.
Peer education is one of the answers. Classmates who understand seizures and epilepsy are better able to provide safe and friendly environments for their peers living with seizures.
To help school staff and students learn the facts about seizures and epilepsy, the BC Epilepsy Society has developed the Partners in Teaching program. This initiative consists of free educational workshops and resources especially for school staff and students.
The Partners in Teaching workshops for school staff provide education about seizures, first aid, and the related psychosocial and learning issues. These workshops are free and are presented in 45, 60 or 90 minute sessions.
Who Benefits From this Workshop?
The BC Epilepsy Society delievers Partners in Teaching workshops to elementary and secondary school staff at individual schools and at school district events throughout BC. Upon request, we also provide workshops to childcare centres, community associations, recreation staff, school transit providers, and more. Some of the organizations who have received Partners in Teaching workshops include:
• Westcoast Childcare Resource Centre
• Cardinal Transportation
• Vernon Foster Parents Association
• Capilano College Early Childhood Care and Education Program
• Developmental Disabilities Association
• Vancouver Parks and Recreation
• Surrey Association for Community Living
