Disneyland Adventure for Kids with Epilepsy!
July 18, 2008
We're excited to announce that five children with epilepsy have an opportunity to participate in an all expenses paid trip to Disneyland. This initiative is courtesy of Dreams Take Flight, a national non-profit organization consisting of Air Canada volunteers dedicated to providing the trip-of-a-lifetime to physically, mentally or socially challenged children.
In order to have the opportunity to attend, children must be between 6-10 years old, and have not visited any Disney theme park. Children must also have Canadian citizenship and hold a valid Canadian passport. The trip to Disneyland takes place on Tuesday, October 21st. The BC Epilepsy Society will be holding a draw to determine the lucky ticket recipients. To enter the draw, submit the completed application form and proof of membership to our office. The deadline to apply is Thursday, September 4th.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Will my child need any money?
No. Please do not send any money, toys or cameras with your child. The children will receive toys, a disposable camera as well as spending money that we strongly encourage the children to spend on themselves.
Will my child get fed?
Yes. Breakfast will be served on the flight from Vancouver to Los Angeles. Lunch will be supplied at Disneyland as well as refreshments and snacks during the day. Dinner is served on the flight back from Los Angeles to Vancouver.
Do children from outside the Lower Mainland Qualify?
Yes. We will accept applications from all over British Columbia.
Is there an information session/orientation before the trip?
Yes. It is mandatory for all children as well as at least one of their parents/guardians to attend the Meet & Greet session in early October. The time and location will be given to BC Epilepsy as soon as it is available.
What if my child gets ill?
We will have a doctor and other medical staff with us on the trip. All children should be stable enough to make it through this adventurous day. All children will be covered by travel insurance, however our group insurance policy states that it will not cover any pre-existing health condition(s) unless condition(s) have been stable for 30 days prior to the flight.
How many children will be participating? Who will be supervising my child?
We will be taking 125 children as well as 70 – 80 adult escorts from Vancouver. Once we get off the plane in Los Angeles we will be met by another 40 – 50 adult escorts. So the ratio for most groups is 1 on 1. We divide 125 kids into groups of five so we have 25 groups of 5 children. Most groups have 4 – 5 adult escorts in them. A representative from the BC Epilepsy Society will also be accompanying the group. Each group must stay together the whole day, separating the group is not allowed.
What time is the flight leaving and what time will it be back in Vancouver?
Check in for the flight begins at 4:30am. The flight will be leaving from the Air Canada Hangar at 6:00am sharp. Check in must be complete no later than 5:30am. We will arrive back at the same location approximately between 10:30pm and 11:00pm.
How long will the children be at Disneyland?
Upon arrival in Los Angeles we will be boarding 5 motor coaches that will take us to Disneyland. The ride from Los Angeles to Anaheim takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on traffic. Usually we are at Disneyland from about 10:30am to 6:45pm.
