The Board of Directors and staff of the BC Epilepsy Society are accountable to the stakeholders they serve across British Columbia and to the people who financially support our programs, services, and research. Our Society has adopted the Ethical Fundraising and Financial Accountability Code of Imagine Canada.
In 2004, our Board of Directors and staff conducted a needs assessment with the support of a team of volunteers from Leadership Vancouver. 1183 surveys were sent out and in-person interviews were conducted. The survey was also available on-line through our website.
With the feedback generated, our Board of Directors and staff developed the Society's first five-year strategic plan to start in January of 2005. There were five directions that formed the heart of the Society's first-ever strategic plan: research, collaboration, improvement in information services, offering services beyond the Lower Mainland, and public awareness. At the start of each year of the plan, our Board of Directors sets out goals and objectives for that upcoming year.
The development and implementation of strategic directions is not enough. Evaluation is critical. In the January/February 2003 issue of Advancing Philanthropy, there is an article on accountability that states that' "Nonprofits smart enough to understand the power that honestly reported program results will make sure their internal operations are just as transparent."
In 2008, our Society finished its first strategic plan one year ahead of schedule thanks to the dedication of volunteers, stakeholders, and staff. With another team of volunteers from Leadership Vancouver, we completed a new needs assessment in the fall of 2008. With that feedback, the Society's Board of Directors adopted a new strategic plan in January 2009.
At the end of each year of our strategic plan, we publish a report card that outlines how we fared against our goals and objectives for that year and describes what we can do to improve in the next fiscal year. To download a copy of our 2011 report card please click here.
Our Board of Directors also adopted a new mission statement: We empower, educate, and support British Columbians living with epilepsy and their families, and fund research to find a cure.
